Hey Doll!

During our mid-August break, we visited the Musée de la Poupée Paris which this year, is celebrating its 20th birthday with a permanent collection of more than 600 dolls, created from 1800 to 1959. There are wax dolls, porcelain dolls, wooden, cloth, rubber, celluloid, plastic dolls; creepy ones, googly – eyed ones, disturbingly realistic and adorable ones. I hope you enjoy this time-travel back to the age of innocence, as much as we did!

  1. I remember playing with dolls till quite late…is that worrying?!
These are both beautiful and slightly macabre too, especially the ones with eyes cast to the side like they’re looking at something out of our viewpoint.

    • I wasn’t much of a dolly girl, preferring my car or animals collection… then again, I found a photo of me combing the long hair of a blond one… I must have been around 15!
In this collection in Paris, there were some really creepy ones whose eyes where following you whichever side you looked from!

  2. Lovely photos! Slightly spooky some dolls but I love the way they record history. I found 2 can -can dollies in Paris flea markets…18 years apart. I am convinced they smiled as I reunited them…..

  3. I was probably one of few female children who was not enamored with dolls. As an adult, I find them beautiful as an antique. I can appreciate the craftsmanship — but they are not something I would collect. On the other hand, I am happy that you guys had a lovely time. XO

    • I was one of these kids too. Loved little cars and trains and plastic animals. Occasionally dolls too but not much. I really admired my grandmother’s patience in caring for them, brushing their hair, washing them and knitting new little dresses! I now regard antique dolls as little works of art and I still admire those who collect and care for them, passing a pretty piece of history down to younger generations. xxx
